Time to Retreat

I hope you have had a great summer.  Looking forward to seeing, singing, and worshipping with you.  Our retreat is less than two weeks away.

We will meet on Thursday, August 15 at Forest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore.  Thank you to Mark Fried and Forest Home BC for allowing us to meet in a central location for everyone.

Our plan for the day is:

  • 10am - Meet in the choir room at FHBC and rehearse new SMET music for 2019-2020

  • 11:45am - Break for lunch (on your own)

  • 1pm - Finish Rehearsing SMET music

  • 3pm - Head home

We have some great new music - and will be up on the website in the next few days.  Go to smetex.org and click on the “2019-20 Music” box on the right hand side of the home page.  You’ll find vocal music, instrumental music and demos you can listen to.  Looking forward to seeing you on the 15th.  I am excited about what God has in store for SMET this year.  Continue to pray for one another.

Summer is Here

I hope you are having a great week. Summer has arrived in East Texas (nothing like a beautiful sunrise accompanied by humidity and mosquitoes). No matter the circumstances, it is a day the Lord has made and we will rejoice!! I’m looking forward to seeing you at Forest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore on August 15 for a great day of rehearsal and fellowship.

Our plan for the day is:
10:00am - Meet in the choir room at FHBC / rehearse new SMET music for 2019-20
11:30am - Break for lunch (on your own)
1:00pm - Finish Rehearsing SMET music

Thank you for the many suggestions/links/copies of music that you have sent me. I am currently sorting through both some new and older pieces. I am excited about what God has in store for SMET this fall. Continue to pray for one another.

Reasons to be in Singing Men of East Texas

Whether your church
is large or small,
demographically diverse,
contemporary or traditional,
this ministry is for you!

  • If you are a full/part time minister of music, volunteer leader, or Christian music educator, you should be in Singing Men of East Texas (SMET).

  • You need continued growth as a minister and musician. You will be stretched in both areas by participating in SMET.

  • You need to participate in a ministry that you are not leading as a testimony to your congregation. Such involvement will help you understand the commitment level of your people as they volunteer their time for your ministry.

  • You need fellowship with other ministers if you are going to finish your race in ministry.

  • SMET is a missions organization touching our Judea and literally the “ends of the earth.” You need to be involved in missions that touch the world with the Gospel of Christ through the gift of music.

  • You need to be an encourager to those who follow you in ministry. SMET is committed to mentoring and coaching young leaders.

  • The network of SMET is strong. Many times the Lord has used this ministry as a point of contact for churches in need of a minister of music.

What a Season!

The end we ought to propose to ourselves is to become, in this life,
the most perfect worshipers of God we can possibly be,
as we hope to be through all eternity.
— Brother Lawrence

What a day it was on February 21 for our Singing Men at Oakland Heights Baptist Church! Seventy-nine men in attendance for a great day of rehearsal and fellowship followed by a wonderful night of praise with a full house and a sound that was just incredible. Thank you, Josh Thomas and Oakland Heights guys for hosting us. Thank you, Charlotte Taylor for your continued work that makes so much of what we do possible. I believe it was the largest number our Singing Men group has ever had for an event - thank you men for your faithfulness!

During our business session on the 21st, our men unanimously elected Andre Simon to be our new director. I cannot tell you what a joy this is for me! After 15 years as your director, I truly believe the time is right for this change. Andre is a friend and a brother who is a skilled musician with a heart of worship. Most of you have already experienced his leadership as Andre has been serving as our associate director this year. We will work together for the remainder of this season and then Andre will begin as director when our new season begins in August. Congratulate him, encourage him and most of all pray for him as he begins this new journey.

Our next stop this spring will be with Harold Smith and our friends at FBC New Boston on TUESDAY, March 12. We usually meet on Thursdays, but this week is spring break for many area schools, and Tuesday worked better. In past years we have had some wonderful times of worship at this church, and I look forward to another such day in March. I'm happy that we will have my friend, Dr. Bret Steed with us for this concert to play trombone. I believe you'll enjoy getting to know Bret and appreciate his wonderful musical gift as he shares the prelude and then sits in with our brass group. You'll find the concert schedule attached to this e-mail.

I'm also sending a tentative schedule for our April 4 joint concert with the Southeast Singing Men at FBC Huntsville. We had such a great time with our Southeast brothers in Madisonville last year. I realize it is a long trip for many of us, but I believe you'll be blessed for the effort if you can attend. We look forward to having our Texas Baptists director of the office of music and worship, Tom Tillman with us that day as well. Music and demos for this concert are available on our website www.smetex.org. It's going to be a great day!
